So where do you fit into it? If what you're claiming is true, you aren't a human.
[He still doesn't know if he completely believes it because it goes against everything he knows. But he's gotten over his knee-jerk reaction of before. Mostly.]
[Fabric shuffles as Kid shifts closer to the tablet.]
I should clarify. Demon Weapons are human in appearance but are often not technically considered as such. Furthermore, not all Meisters are human--myself included.
[And there it is, the moment that everything shifts and Kid understands. His answer is delayed by an uncomfortably long coughing fit; he seems breathless when he replies.]
My father--is founder an' headmaster. One day, I'll take his place.
[Kid pauses, breathing hard for a few seconds, audible over the network. Finally:] He wanted me t'understand the humans we serve...though I enrolled m'self. I wanted to help during a remedial lesson and only students can do so.
[Undertaker falls silent while Kid coughs, the sound a bit worse than it had been just days prior. He wouldn't be surprised if the teen hacked up an actual lung, next.]
Hmm... [He rolls his head to the other side where he's laying, taking the tablet with him to prop it up again.]
You only observe them, but you don't collect their souls. Is that right?
[Don't worry, Undertaker! That's not an effect of MN poisoning.
Something fumbles, and there's crinkling, a pause as he takes a sip of water to try and ease the uncomfortable tickling in his throat. The thought of taking more cough syrup crosses his mind, despite the taste.]
[It might feel strange that Undertaker seems to be knowledgeable about soul collecting. Though the idea of a Reaper coming to take a human at the end of their life isn't an uncommon belief.]
Oh? Only technically, hm...
[He thinks. It wouldn't make sense if there isn't some sort of soul collection, but perhaps it's not the humans themselves are being taken.]
As a Meister working with a pair of Demon Weapons, I actively seek the souls of the corrupted. However, I am not unique in that respect.
[Kid pauses, and there's a shift in his tone, just slightly more somber. He has been raised, after all, to have a great deal of compassion for the humans he serves.] As the next Grim Reaper, yeah, I do collect the souls of humans as well.
Well, we both take care of the dead in different ways, don't we?
[The slight shift in tone doesn't escape his notice, either. Undertaker purses his lips a bit from his end of the conversation, faint brows raising beneath his hair.]
[Kid's expression darkens, and he glances away from the tablet. His tone has not lightened in the slightest.] Good and evil must maintain an equilibrium--I understand this. Too much of one or the other and there is no balance, still...
[Kid swallows, mind drifting to the room of innocent human souls he'd found captured and prepared for the kishin; his stomach flips uncomfortably.] I am no supporter of human suffering.
It is difficult to remain neutral while being simultaneously invested in the lives and well-beings of each and every innocent human.
I imagine you might feel similarly-- [The teen pauses, thinking at first before a few weak coughs keep him speechless a few moments longer.] --that the being responsible for your death have a bit more propensity towards allowing you to live longer.
I think many humans are worth saving. [Kid closes his eyes, thoughtful.] I in fact believe most are, though it is most definitely not within my purview to allow such things.
[He pauses, a quiet determination in his voice.] Death teaches how precious life is, and lives that can be saved should be. If that thinking will get me into trouble, so be it.
[Kid hums in quiet agreement, shivering on his side of the tablet. His opinions on life and death are not necessarily complicated, but they are deeply personal and very deep-seated--and also ones he typically does not share freely.
[Kid had begun to doze off in the intervening silence, his breathing slowing and evening out, but turns sleepily towards the tablet when Undertaker speaks again.]
Y'should sleep too. [A small yawn is audible through the connection.] An' no more tablets y'don't know anything about.
